The Community
Set along two protected miles of Long Island Sound shoreline with its own harbor and sandy beaches, the city of Rye is a pleasing mix of natural beauty and urban amenities. The smallest city in New York State, it is six square miles in area, has a population of almost 17,000 people and is governed by a Mayor and six-member City Council.
Founded in 1660, this well-known, richly historic community is almost completely residential in character and rests within an area of notable affluence. A wide variety of architectural styles provide an interesting diversity of living choices in Rye. The charming "downtown", with its quaint shops and elegant boutiques, imparts the flavor of a classic "New England village" to this haven for professionals and executives, many of whom commute to nearby New York City.
Educational Facilities
Recognized for academic excellence, three elementary schools, and a combined junior and senior high school serve the district, all with low student-to-teacher ratios. In fact, 94% of Rye High School graduates go on to higher education. Private instruction is available at the Rye Country Day School, Resurrection School and , in Purchase, the Japanese language Keio Academy.
Recreational Facilities
Rye is unsurpassed in entertainment facilities, enjoying the sparkling waters of Long Island Sound, beautiful beaches, woodlands and nature preserves. The civilized amenities of many private country clubs include the nearby Westchester Country Club, home of the famed Westchester Buick Classic. The Rye Golf Club, for Rye residents, provides a waterfront, 18-hole course, putting green, Olympic-size swimming pool and dining facilities in the magnificent "Whitby Castle" Clubhouse. For sailors, the City Boat Marina and private boatyards beckon, and Rye Playland Amusement Park adds another wonderful dimension. In addition, Rye is fortunate to have two tennis court sites, the Rye Arts Center and a YMCA.
Transportation
Convenient for commutation, Rye is twenty-three miles from Manhattan, thirty-seven minutes by Metro-North express train to Grand Central Station. The Hutchinson River Parkway and Interstate Routes 287 and 95 are easily accessible. Westchester County Airport is nearby; LaGuardia Airport and J.F.K. Airport are within comfortable driving distance and can also be reached via bus.
